Lieutenant-Colonel McQueen was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1967, and spent his childhood growing up on a farm in Mount Hope, which is now part of the City of Hamilton. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces on 16 June 1988 as a Private with The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (Wentworth Regiment) (RHLI). The following year, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and selected to command a platoon in B Company. As a Lieutenant, Lieutenant-Colonel McQueen commanded a platoon in the Third Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment when the RHLI provided N Company for that unit. During this event, called World Youth Day, he oversaw the daily activities of the department responsible for the transportation of 800,000 participants. In 2004, Lt-Col McQueen was selected to set up and command C Company of the RHLI, which marked the regiment's expansion into the City of Burlington under the Land Force Reserve Restructure program. In recognition of his leadership and initiative in this endeavour, he was awarded his second Commander LFCA Commendation in 2007. In 2011, Lt-Col McQueen deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan and was attached to 10 Mountain Division (US Army) as part of the Regional Command-South Headquarters where he earned a Canadian Joint Task Force Commander’s Commendation for his exemplary work as the Stability Operations Border Coordinator. Dec. 02, 2017 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Our Rotary Club has for many years manned the Kettle for the Salvation Army for a day before Christmas at Stone Road Mall. Typically volunteers work 2 hour shifts, and hopefully 2 volunteers per shift. Anyone who has done it in the past will attest to what a wonderful experience it is, as so many of those making contributions to the kettles also share their personal stories and reasons for gladly making the contribution. Ann Caine organizes the scheduling of the volunteers - she just needs to know who would be available that day. If you would like to participate that day (and feel free to include family) please click "accept" and in the comments box include any preferences for times eg. morning or afternoon. When you do this Ann will get the information and will be able to put the schedules together. Ann herself typically covers the 10am-11am slot, getting everything set up, and will be available the rest of the day in case needed. Thank you for helping us continue this valuable and enjoyable community service initiative in this "season of giving". |

Margaret's home has sold, and she is moving to Kincardine in January! Although she will be on the books as a member until June 2018 (assuming she doesn't transfer her membership to a new Club before then) we probably won't be seeing her for a few months. So we want to give her a nice send off this Thursday! We have some special guests that will be attending, to also say so long to her, including current Assistant Governor Darlene Carpenter, Past District Governor Patsy Marshall, and one of her daughters Lisa MacDonald who is the President-Elect for the Elora club. We have booked the PINES room and a hot buffet breakfast, so please let us know if you'll be able to attend so that we can confirm numbers to Springfield. |

The Guelph Rotaract Club invites all Guelph South members to join them at their February 27th meeting. Appetizers will be provided, you buy your own beverages! The Rotaractors need to advise the pub of the numbers that might be attending for that meeting, so please indicate if you will, or will not, be attending, so that we can let them know as soon as possible. Members have attended these in previous years and say they're a blast, so think about attending if you have never. These students do an amazing amount of good in the community, considering what are undoubtedly crushing university/study schedules. Let's support them as they've always supported us! |

Water Ambassadors Canada
Mar. 15, 2018
In 2002, retired teachers Barry Hart and Heather Alloway heard a presentation about the desperate need for clean water around the world. Within a year they found themselves in a poor village in Guatemala with a team of like-minded people, drilling a well. Their passion grew from that experience and they founded LWI Canada which is now known as Water Ambassadors Canada (WAC). Since then, hundreds of teams from across Canada have travelled to Central America, the Caribbean, Uganda, DR Congo, and Colombia to provide clean water solutions to those without. Water Ambassadors Canada is a faith based, non profit, registered Canadian charity. We take Canadian teams to drill and repair wells, set up water purification systems, distribute water filters, and teach health and hygiene. |

Apr. 22, 2018 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
We, as a community, know the importance of charities and other non-profit organizations and what they give to the people within our Community. Within each charity or non-profit is a group of volunteers that is responsible for much of the charity's success. These are the tireless individuals that provide support, skills, talents, and abilities to give someone hope and strength and the courage to face another day. They do not ask for accolades; they give their time generously without any expectation of reward. The Rotary Club of Guelph South is pleased and excited to announce the 3rd Annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch at Cutten Fields. This will be an event to recognize 100 of the tireless volunteers within 10 selected charities or non-profits throughout Guelph and Wellington County. In addition, we will be providing donations to the selected charities as a thank you for everything that they give to those in need. We look forward to honouring those volunteers at this time of appreciation! |

FOOD4KIDS for Guelph/Wellington/Dufferin
Apr. 26, 2018
In Guelph-Wellington it’s estimated (and acknowledged by our local school boards) that 1,500 to 1,800 children in our local schools experience food insecurity in their homes – marginal, moderate or severe. Food insecurity refers to inadequate or insecure access to food due to financial constraints. Food4Kids Waterloo-Wellington provides packages of healthy food for kids aged 14 years and under with limited or no access to food each weekend. Packages of healthy food are prepared by volunteers and delivered to schools each Friday to ensure children have nourishment over the weekend. The four Guelph Rotary clubs, together with The SEED, have formed a steering committee to bring Food4Kids to Guelph-Wellington-Dufferin. All four clubs have provided startup funding and The SEED is providing free space, purchasing power and logistics management. Note: The SEED is a community food project of the Guelph CHC, a collaborative initiative of community partners in Guelph & Wellington with the shared vision of strengthening the local emergency food system, using the power of food to build healthy communities and addressing the underlying issues of food insecurity and poverty. Tom Armitage (The SEED) is Distribution Co-ordinator, Garden Fresh Box Co-ordinator |

Best Version Media
May 03, 2018
Leah DeSpiegelaere (pronouced “Duh-Spee-Gler”) came to Guelph back in 2000 to complete her Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing. After graduation she spent 7 years in Arts Administration helping theatres and orchestras sell subscription series tickets then moved on to corporate retail working for Cadillac Fairview shopping centres for another 6. Through the career transitions with different companies, Leah always found great joy in the connections that she made with and for the individuals that she encountered. And that is what she loves the most about the neighbourhood magazines she is currently producing … having the ability to connect residents in neighbourhoods with each other and with the local businesses that surround them. In addition to the Guelph publications, Best Version Media magazines serve over 500 neighbourhoods in North America, 100 of which are in Canada. So, though Leah’s day-to-day work is extremely local, she does have the support of a larger organization behind her. When you get your hands on the publication I’m sure you will think “Yes Leah, it is a magazine. I have seen a magazine it feels like a magazine and I’m sure it works just like a magazine.” But today she will be sharing with us the many reasons why it is so different than what you have seen before. |
