Living Better On Less
Sep. 14, 2017
A greater sense of wellbeing, freedom and self-reliance comes from living a more frugal life, says Susan Carey and Ann Chidwick, facilitators of this year’s Living Better on Less program. The eight-week program – one session each week on Tuesday evenings – teaches people how to consume less, spend less, and simplify their lives, while having a positive impact on environment. The program starts on May 2, 6-8 p.m. at the former Tytler Public School at 131 Ontario St. Childcare and snacks are provided. The program is free of charge. The program shares skills that are environmentally friendly. Participants learn how to purchase and consume less, thereby reducing the amount of harmful waste they produce. There are lessons in the making of things like ecologically sensitive cleaning and laundry solutions. Living Better for Less is for anyone who wants to learn how to live thriftily, whether they are on a fixed income, unemployed, retired, or just eager to lives a simpler more natural life and consume less because it’s the right thing to do. The program is made possible through funding from a number of sources, including a City of Guelph wellbeing grant, and funding from TD Friends of the Environment and Rotary Clubs of Guelph. |

Focus on Nature
Sep. 21, 2017
Connecting kids to nature through photography. Focus on Nature is a registered charity based in Guelph Ontario that inspires young people to explore and connect with nature through photography. We conduct workshops in schools and day camps in the summer and during March Break. SIMON BELL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: Since being given a hand-me-down Box Brownie camera at the age of six, photography has been a thread through Simon’s life that links the many artistic, commercial, and now educational endeavors that he’s been involved with. After studying at York University, Simon worked as a studio photographer before starting his own audio-visual business in Toronto, creating corporate presentations for over twenty years. At the same time he was pursuing his passion for nature photography and developing new skills in stereoscopy, the art and science of 3D photography. These two interests came together in a series of children’s nature books, featuring his 3D photos of wildlife, published by Penguin/Ladybird Books and Somerville House Books. The series was very successful, selling over 150,000 copies in six different countries. Simon is well known in Guelph as the former publisher and photographer for SNAP Guelph, the newspaper he co-founded in 2005. He continues to lecture on stereo photography and exhibit his photographic work around the province. He has been a volunteer instructor with Focus On Nature since 2011 and as Executive Director he continues to inspire young photographers to get out and explore their local environment with their cameras. |

In 2004, The Green Legacy® was just a simple idea to plant 150,000 trees to celebrate the County's 150 year anniversary. That idea has grown to over one million trees planted in the County of Wellington by community partners, making it the largest municipal tree planting programme in North America! The Green Legacy® has caught the attention of the United Nations. In 2010, the programme was recognized under the Billion Tree Campaign for their help in the fight against climate change. The environment remains a very significant political, social and economic issue that involves all levels of government. Tree planting is an easy but effective way to improve the environment. The County fosters local initiative by providing trees free of charge to its residents and community groups. |

Friends of Mill Creek
Nov. 02, 2017
Friends of Mill Creek (FOMC) is a volunteer, community-based organization that supports landowners in rehabilitating Mill Creek. The group first organized in late 1997 for the purpose of implementing some of the recommendations contained in the Mill Creek Subwatershed Study. Everyone who is part of the group freely volunteers their time and talent. To outside observers, our group members may appear to have conflicting interests; however, around the table, we set aside our differences and focus our efforts for the benefit of this cold-water creek. Friends of Mill Creek is incorporated under the laws of Ontario. We work in partnership with other agencies, including the Grand River Conservation Foundation. The Foundation, a Registered Charity, accepts donations on our behalf and provides charitable tax receipts Don McKay is President of FOMC. He also represents Ward 7, including Puslinch Township, on Wellington County Council. |

Dec. 02, 2017 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Our Rotary Club has for many years manned the Kettle for the Salvation Army for a day before Christmas at Stone Road Mall. Typically volunteers work 2 hour shifts, and hopefully 2 volunteers per shift. Anyone who has done it in the past will attest to what a wonderful experience it is, as so many of those making contributions to the kettles also share their personal stories and reasons for gladly making the contribution. Ann Caine organizes the scheduling of the volunteers - she just needs to know who would be available that day. If you would like to participate that day (and feel free to include family) please click "accept" and in the comments box include any preferences for times eg. morning or afternoon. When you do this Ann will get the information and will be able to put the schedules together. Ann herself typically covers the 10am-11am slot, getting everything set up, and will be available the rest of the day in case needed. Thank you for helping us continue this valuable and enjoyable community service initiative in this "season of giving". |

Margaret's home has sold, and she is moving to Kincardine in January! Although she will be on the books as a member until June 2018 (assuming she doesn't transfer her membership to a new Club before then) we probably won't be seeing her for a few months. So we want to give her a nice send off this Thursday! We have some special guests that will be attending, to also say so long to her, including current Assistant Governor Darlene Carpenter, Past District Governor Patsy Marshall, and one of her daughters Lisa MacDonald who is the President-Elect for the Elora club. We have booked the PINES room and a hot buffet breakfast, so please let us know if you'll be able to attend so that we can confirm numbers to Springfield. |

The Guelph Rotaract Club invites all Guelph South members to join them at their February 27th meeting. Appetizers will be provided, you buy your own beverages! The Rotaractors need to advise the pub of the numbers that might be attending for that meeting, so please indicate if you will, or will not, be attending, so that we can let them know as soon as possible. Members have attended these in previous years and say they're a blast, so think about attending if you have never. These students do an amazing amount of good in the community, considering what are undoubtedly crushing university/study schedules. Let's support them as they've always supported us! |
