The Shoebox Project
Jan. 10, 2019
The Shoebox Project for Women collects and distributes gift-filled Shoeboxes to women impacted by homelessness in Guelph-Wellington. Each thoughtfully created and decorated Shoebox is filled with items valued at $50 that can enhance self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation for women in need. Why It Matters For women who have been displaced from their homes and estranged from their families, the holidays can be a particularly challenging time. Often, women feel disconnected from society, forgotten and alone. Reducing the feelings of isolation and loneliness faced by women living in shelters is one of the most important outcomes of The Shoebox Project. A Shoebox gift is a powerful reminder for a woman that she has not been forgotten and that she remains a valued and respected member of her community. Our Shoeboxes go to Women Accessing the Following Agencies: Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis Family Counselling & Support Services for Guelph-Wellington Michael House 2nd Chance Employment Counselling Wyndham House Welcome In Drop-In Centre |

Rotary - Canada to Scotland Curling Tour 2018
Jan. 24, 2019
The Tour is a friendship tour where we hope to renew existing friendships and to establish new friendships. The Scottish Rotarians welcome the Canadian Rotarians into their homes and introduced them to their family and friends as we do when the Tour comes to Canada every fourth year. The tour has evolved over the years and is now comprised of 22 Rotary curlers. In 2008, the first lady Rotarian joined the Scottish Tour Team and then in 2010, two lady Rotarians joined the Canadian Tour Team. Over the years the Tour has achieved legendary status as a test of skill and stamina and has been called the “trip of a lifetime”. It has been responsible for building strong friendships with team mates and with Rotary hosts. It really is a magical combination of Rotary and Curling fellowship. Friendly but very competitive curling is part of the tour and every game is hard fought with trophies and bragging rights on the line. Rotary clubs in Scotland and Canada have supported the Tour financially and have made the commitment to supply hosts and curlers for future tours. In return for that support, each of these clubs has the right to send a curler on a subsequent tour. However, all Rotarian curlers who have hosted a Touring Scot are eligible for the tour. Those that have participated will never forget the hospitality received and the friendships made. |

Nicole is the Manager of Membership Services for the new Guelph team in the Canadian Elite Basketball League. Nicole joined us at our December meeting where we assembled gift bags for Chalmers Community Services and shoeboxes for the Guelph Shoebox Project. The following is the message from the President of the new club, from their website (www.thenighthawks.ca): “Basketball is the second-fastest growing sport in Canada, and in Guelph the Nighthawks have a unique opportunity to support the growth of the game at a community level. The Guelph Nighthawks Professional Basketball Club are firm believers that the only way to find success is through the development of the game at a grassroots capacity throughout the community. You will find the entire Nighthawk family will be active members within the city, sharing our resources, building our community and coming together as one around the game of basketball. Game nights will be an experience like no other in Guelph. We’ll invite you to come downtown early, wear your Nighthawk colours, enjoy one of the many restaurant patios, peruse some of the shops and partake in the vibrancy of downtown Guelph. Once inside the Sleeman Centre these athletes will not only put on an incredible show, but your night will be built around an evening’s worth of memorable entertainment for both the ardent basketball fan and those looking for an entertaining and affordable night out with their family. This project proposes to place a reading “bunko” in each elementary school in Caborca in a multi-year project. A bunko contains book shelves, 200 books, rug and cushions as a reading place. 80% of the funds are for the books themselves. It is proposed to install 5 bunkos per year at $12,500 USD for 5 years. This totals a little over $60K USD and would reach a student population of over 7,000.

Apr. 07, 2019 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
We, as a community, know the importance of charities and other non-profit organizations and what they give to the people within our Community. Within each charity or non-profit is a group of volunteers that is responsible for much of the charity's success. These are the tireless individuals that provide support, skills, talents, and abilities to give someone hope and strength and the courage to face another day. They do not ask for accolades; they give their time generously without any expectation of reward. The Rotary Club of Guelph South is pleased and excited to announce the 4th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch at Cutten Fields. This will be an event to recognize 100 of the tireless volunteers within 10 selected charities or non-profits throughout Guelph and Wellington County. In addition, we will be providing donations to the selected charities as a thank you for everything that they give to those in need. Congratulations to the 10 organizations being honoured in 2019! |
