Pedal For Portage - September 22, 2018
Aug. 16, 2018
Portage Ontario, a non-profit organisation established in 1985, operates a residential drug addiction rehabilitation centre for youth in Elora, Ontario. The Portage Elora treatment centre serves Ontario youth referred by parents, schools, family physicians, hospitals, other addiction-treatment and youth-serving agencies, as well as Youth Justice and the Children's Aid Society. We all know someone, whether a family member, friend, or colleague, who has been affected by addiction in some way. It wreaks havoc on our society and it is our shared responsibility to help young people who are suffering before it’s too late. At Portage, they can acquire the skills to free themselves from the grasp of addiction. It will assure them a better future, and benefit all of society. JOIN RIDERS OF ALL LEVELS FOR A DAY OF FUN AND ACTIVITY AT PORTAGE ONTARIO'S INAUGURAL CYCLING EVENT. Be part of a community ready to bring awareness to the Portage Residential Treatment Centre in Elora and support vulnerable Ontario youth working to combat their substance dependency and go on to lead healthy, productive and drug-free lives. Know Your Limits: A Hands on Introduction to Keeping Healthy
Aug. 23, 2018
Since Dr. Peter Fraser graduated from Philip Institute of Technology (Melbourne) in 1991, he has provided chiropractic care in Australia, Northern Ireland and England while attending numerous postgraduate courses, searching for knowledge and techniques that will provide his patients with maximum results. Recently, Dr. Fraser released ownership of 2 chiropractic centres in England to return to Canada. Previous to his career as a chiropractor, Dr. Fraser held positions as Executive Director of several Canadian Sport Governing Bodies administrating programs at the national and international level. Dr. Fraser graduated with a BA. and M.A from the University of Western Ontario while captaining the Mustangs hockey team and achieving All Canadian status at centre. He then played and coached in the Swiss National Hockey League system. Dr. Fraser sees a common link among all people – babies, children, youth and adult – we wish to live our lives at the maximum level of our ability; however we do not always know how to achieve it. To achieve this potential is the motivation that Dr. Fraser has for your health. Since the neurological system is the master controller of the human experience, this can only be achieved when the nervous system is working at its maximum potential. I look forward to providing you and your family with gentle and effective chiropractic care to assist you and your family to live a healthier and fuller life. |

Aug. 29, 2018 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
At the August 16th weekly meeting we heard an exceptionally inspirational message from representatives of the Portage Ontario program. Daniela Rodrigo, Manager of Development, Ontario and Evan, a resident of the Elora facility. Evan's talk was just so compelling that he was given a standing ovation by the Rotarians in attendance!
Evan is just 18 years old, and thanks to the existence of the residential program offered by Portage Ontario, has turned his life around and is getting ready to enter a vocational program at Mohawk College with a goal to becoming an electrician - something that a few years ago probably would not have been possible. He is now a responsible, confident, well-spoken and thoughtful young man.
The Board of Directors and the Youth Service Committee will be investigating the possibility of sponsoring Evan at the 2019 Camp Enterprise Program, as he is specifically the type of motivated student that the program is geared to.
We have all been invited to join Evan for a tour of the Elora residential facility this Wednesday, August 29th, at 4:00pm. Portage's Director Development, Sourav Addy, will welcome everyone as they arrive but it will be the kids....the residents....that will conduct the tour. If you were at the August 16th meeting and want to see this remarkable facility and how they accomplish what they do - or if you weren't at the meeting and want to meet Evan and see for yourself - then you're invited to come to Elora on Wednesday for the tour.

The Portage Residential Treatment Centre in Elora provides support to vulnerable Ontario youth working to combat their substance dependency and go on to lead healthy, productive and drug-free lives. Check out their website for so much information on how they accomplish this and for information on how you can help them. For information contact: 416-531-1333 or 519-501-5135 |

Sep. 26, 2018 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Once again this year we are hosting an Open House event where members can bring guests who would be prospective Rotarians. We'll enjoy wine and cheese, fun and fellowship at Springfield, and the guests can find out more about Rotary and our club in particular. We'll also do some cheque presentations. Rotarians will pay $15.00 each, their guests as prospective members will attend at no charge and will be provided with one drink ticket and appetizers (they can buy additional drink tickets if they wish). If you know of someone who is looking for a way to give back, and who would be interested in finding out more about the great work that we do and the impact that we have as a club both locally and internationally - invite them to attend! This is an opportunity to showcase our club and its accomplishments, and hopefully generate some new member interest at the same time. Be sure to let us know though who you will be bringing so that we can ensure that they have a name tag, and so that we can give Springfield an idea of how many will be in attendance. |

Chalmers Community Services Centre
Nov. 29, 2018
Each year we enjoy donating enough contents to complete 10 gift bags for Chalmers Community Services Centre's Christmas Gift Bag Campaign. This year is no different! With a goal of collecting 800 gift bags filled with basic items for people in need, the charitable organization received an unprecedented response, taking in 831 gift bags in 2017 — almost 200 more than were received in 2016. We'll use this meeting to sort all of the donated goods and assemble the gift bags, so that they can be delivered to Chalmers. |

Dec. 01, 2018 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Our Rotary Club has for many years manned the Kettle for the Salvation Army for a day before Christmas at Stone Road Mall. Typically volunteers work 2 hour shifts, and hopefully 2 volunteers per shift. Anyone who has done it in the past will attest to what a wonderful experience it is, as so many of those making contributions to the kettles also share their personal stories and reasons for gladly making the contribution. Ann Caine organizes the scheduling of the volunteers - she just needs to know who would be available that day. If you would like to participate that day (and feel free to include family) please click "accept" and in the comments box include any preferences for times eg. morning or afternoon. When you do this Ann will get the information and will be able to put the schedules together. Ann herself typically covers the 10am-11am slot, getting everything set up, and will be available the rest of the day in case needed. Thank you for helping us continue this valuable and enjoyable community service initiative in this "season of giving". |

The Shoebox Project
Jan. 10, 2019
The Shoebox Project for Women collects and distributes gift-filled Shoeboxes to women impacted by homelessness in Guelph-Wellington. Each thoughtfully created and decorated Shoebox is filled with items valued at $50 that can enhance self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation for women in need. Why It Matters For women who have been displaced from their homes and estranged from their families, the holidays can be a particularly challenging time. Often, women feel disconnected from society, forgotten and alone. Reducing the feelings of isolation and loneliness faced by women living in shelters is one of the most important outcomes of The Shoebox Project. A Shoebox gift is a powerful reminder for a woman that she has not been forgotten and that she remains a valued and respected member of her community. Our Shoeboxes go to Women Accessing the Following Agencies: Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis Family Counselling & Support Services for Guelph-Wellington Michael House 2nd Chance Employment Counselling Wyndham House Welcome In Drop-In Centre |

Rotary - Canada to Scotland Curling Tour 2018
Jan. 24, 2019
The Tour is a friendship tour where we hope to renew existing friendships and to establish new friendships. The Scottish Rotarians welcome the Canadian Rotarians into their homes and introduced them to their family and friends as we do when the Tour comes to Canada every fourth year. The tour has evolved over the years and is now comprised of 22 Rotary curlers. In 2008, the first lady Rotarian joined the Scottish Tour Team and then in 2010, two lady Rotarians joined the Canadian Tour Team. Over the years the Tour has achieved legendary status as a test of skill and stamina and has been called the “trip of a lifetime”. It has been responsible for building strong friendships with team mates and with Rotary hosts. It really is a magical combination of Rotary and Curling fellowship. Friendly but very competitive curling is part of the tour and every game is hard fought with trophies and bragging rights on the line. Rotary clubs in Scotland and Canada have supported the Tour financially and have made the commitment to supply hosts and curlers for future tours. In return for that support, each of these clubs has the right to send a curler on a subsequent tour. However, all Rotarian curlers who have hosted a Touring Scot are eligible for the tour. Those that have participated will never forget the hospitality received and the friendships made. |
