Guelph Nighthawks Professional Basketball Club
Mar. 28, 2019
Nicole is the Manager of Membership Services for the new Guelph team in the Canadian Elite Basketball League. Nicole joined us at our December meeting where we assembled gift bags for Chalmers Community Services and shoeboxes for the Guelph Shoebox Project. The following is the message from the President of the new club, from their website (www.thenighthawks.ca): “Basketball is the second-fastest growing sport in Canada, and in Guelph the Nighthawks have a unique opportunity to support the growth of the game at a community level. The Guelph Nighthawks Professional Basketball Club are firm believers that the only way to find success is through the development of the game at a grassroots capacity throughout the community. You will find the entire Nighthawk family will be active members within the city, sharing our resources, building our community and coming together as one around the game of basketball. Game nights will be an experience like no other in Guelph. We’ll invite you to come downtown early, wear your Nighthawk colours, enjoy one of the many restaurant patios, peruse some of the shops and partake in the vibrancy of downtown Guelph. Once inside the Sleeman Centre these athletes will not only put on an incredible show, but your night will be built around an evening’s worth of memorable entertainment for both the ardent basketball fan and those looking for an entertaining and affordable night out with their family. We look forward to building and growing Guelph Nighthawks basketball together, with you, as we lead to tip-off in May, 2019. Cameron Kusch, President |

Carborca Mexico Literacy Project
Apr. 04, 2019
Frank will update the club on the recent trip taken in February 2019 by District 7080 Rotarians (including himself and Club President Linda Main) to Mexico to join Rotarians from other clubs to do polio immunizations plus other projects:
Caborca Mexico District 7080 Field Work
Reading Centres for Caborca Elementary Schools
It has been determined that 42% of children are below minimum reading and comprehension proficiency. This project proposes to place a reading “bunko” in each elementary school in Caborca in a multi-year project. A bunko contains book shelves, 200 books, rug and cushions as a reading place. 80% of the funds are for the books themselves. It is proposed to install 5 bunkos per year at $12,500 USD for 5 years. This totals a little over $60K USD and would reach a student population of over 7,000.

Apr. 07, 2019 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
We, as a community, know the importance of charities and other non-profit organizations and what they give to the people within our Community. Within each charity or non-profit is a group of volunteers that is responsible for much of the charity's success. These are the tireless individuals that provide support, skills, talents, and abilities to give someone hope and strength and the courage to face another day. They do not ask for accolades; they give their time generously without any expectation of reward. The Rotary Club of Guelph South is pleased and excited to announce the 4th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch at Cutten Fields. This will be an event to recognize 100 of the tireless volunteers within 10 selected charities or non-profits throughout Guelph and Wellington County. In addition, we will be providing donations to the selected charities as a thank you for everything that they give to those in need. Congratulations to the 10 organizations being honoured in 2019! |

Jun. 23, 2019 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Tour de Guelph is a cycling event in support of The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital and local Rotary projects through the Rotary clubs of Guelph South and Guelph Trillium. In it’s first five years, this event has raised over $300,000 for our community and has grown into one of Guelph-Wellington’s largest community sporting events. The ride continues to grow each year, now attracting close to 1,000 riders. About 100 volunteers help with the event from planning to marketing, and helping on the day of the event. The majority being Rotarians, plus many other individuals and local business leaders lend a hand. This allows the majority of the proceeds received from sponsorship and peer-to-peer fundraising to go directly to important community initiatives. We are grateful for the continuing involvement of Presenting Sponsor Scotiabank, along with the other corporate sponsors and generous donors. Tour de Guelph is for all ages and abilities and welcomes participation from community members as well as visitors to Guelph-Wellington. For more information on registration options and routes available, check out the website www.tourdeguelph.ca and thanks for your support! |

Jul. 25, 2019 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
(Rain date: Tuesday, August 6, 2019) The Rotary Club of Guelph South is once again partnering with Sunrise Therapeutic Riding & Learning Centre to host children from the Shelldale Family Gateway program. This is the third annual event and each prior year has been a wonderful success - for the kids, for Sunrise and for club members that participated. Activities are expected to include swimming (with a Sunrise lifeguard on duty); low ropes course (a Sunrise Camp Coordinator will supervise); a fully accessible playground; informal soccer game; and a BBQ. Sunrise will have T-shirts to hand out to children and craft material for them to take home. Our Rotary club is donating funds to cover the costs associated with the bussing of the children and Shelldale Family Gateway staff to and from Shelldale. We need approximately 12 volunteers to assist with the following duties: poolside, ropes course, soccer game and food setup, BBQ, coffee, cold drinks, sound system setup, etc. We need 2 or 3 Rotarians to be there between 4:00pm and 5:00pm to help the Sunrise staff with the set-up and 2 or 3 to stay after the children leave to help clean up and get the area ready for the camp the next morning. Food (for everyone) will include hot dogs, hamburgers, cake and ice cream. If you would like to volunteer at the event, please email Ann Caine and let her know where you would like to help. Thanks everyone!
