Club Meeting - Human Trafficking Committee Update
Jul. 22, 2021
|
|
Jul. 27, 2021 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
This newly formed Committee has a mission to raise awareness of, and prevent, the crisis of Human Trafficking within our local and global community through action and education. "Educate to Eradicate"
July 27 2021, 7:00pm Our first in the speaker series is July 27th at 7:00PM. The speaker is from the group CRY NOT. CRY NOT is a volunteer organization formed by two recognized and respected groups within the Dufferin Caledon community. The Rotary Club of Orangeville and Compass Community Church were both moved to action when made aware of the threat of Human Trafficking in their area. Neither party felt qualified to undertake the involved follow-up work that can be required with Human Trafficking victims. Both parties however, did feel strongly about their ability to bring awareness of the threat, tactics, symptoms and resulting devastating personal effects of Human Trafficking to the greater Dufferin Caledon communities. Both of the creating parties of CRY NOT realize that working with others can be more effective than individually, so they have come together as CRY NOT, short for COMPASS ROTARY YOUTH – NO TRAFFICKING.

NO REGULAR MEETING THIS WEEK
Jul. 29, 2021
|
|
Jul. 29, 2021 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Our Rotary Club celebrates the 20th anniversary of it being chartered on July 31 2021. Given the positive response to the email sent out last week to assess the comfort level about gathering, we plan to move forward with the BBQ and the celebration at Sunrise Therapeutic Riding & Learning Centre on Thursday July 29 2021, 5 pm. This fellowship gathering marks our first in-person club meeting since March of 2020 and is something that we are looking forward to. This celebration event will replace our usual Thursday morning ZOOM meeting. All efforts will be made to minimize any potential COVID transmission concerns, and to keep our first gathering simple and fun. To this end we ask that you bring your own chairs, side dishes, beverages and utensils. We will provide the burgers, condiments (mustard, relish and ketchup), napkins and delicious cake baked by Sharron. Of course, social distancing will be in place. We'll determine the safest way to cook and serve the burgers....if restaurants can do it, we can too! As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations we will be planting 20 trees at Sunrise. On the 29th we'll be able to view the actual site where the trees will be planted in October. To assist with food planning, please indicate if you will be attending by Tuesday, July 27. Also, we are in need of a few people to BBQ the burgers. Please let me know if you can assist with this job. There is a Plan B if rain threatens - the arena at Sunrise. (Ann suggests that you don't wear sandals.) We are very excited about gathering and look forward to seeing you next Thursday. Best wishes, Linda

Aug. 24, 2021 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
This newly formed Committee has a mission to raise awareness of, and prevent, the crisis of Human Trafficking within our local and global community through action and education. "Educate to Eradicate".
August 24 2021, 7:00pm: In this second session of our series, you will be hearing from Karly Church, who is a Crisis Intervention Counsellor at a regional support service for victims of human trafficking, and who has spoken for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Karly gives talks at schools, particularly with grade nine students, and with politicians on this issue. She teams up with the Anti Human Trafficking Unit of the regional police force, and often intervenes and talks to individuals who are being trafficked. But this wasn’t always her job. She knows what she is talking about because she is a human trafficking survivor. She will be sharing her powerful story of how she came from a small town, with a seemingly normal family to being trafficked in the sex trade. Living with Lyme Disease
Aug. 26, 2021
Erin grew up in Norfolk County, and playing in the fields she was exposed to ticks and developed a range of symptoms that went undiagnosed as Lyme Disease for many years. Doctors were unable/unwilling to accept that the symptoms were Lyme Disease. She has since become an advocate for testing and getting the disease recognized in Canada. The disease is not recognized by Health Canada and the lack of recognition makes data collection and treatment difficult. Climate change has expanded the range of ticks which allows the tick population to thrive and more northward in Canada. |

Living with autism...the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Sep. 09, 2021
Glenda and Dale Smith’s middle son Justin, was born with autism over 40 years ago. Developmentally, Justin was behind other children. He was extremely underweight, often very sick and was not speaking. It was clear something was not right. The Smith’s were finally given a diagnosis of autism but testing and treatments were experimental at that time. This is their story of living with autism...the good, the bad, and the ugly. |

Sep. 23, 2021 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
Join us for an in-person breakfast fellowship meeting! We have arranged for the meeting room at Symposium Cafe in Guelph, a capacity of 20 persons maximum (5 tables of 4 persons per table). They don't open for breakfast until 8:00am so our meeting will start and end one half hour later than usual. All COVID regulatiions will be in effect - for example, as of September 22nd everyone attending will need to bring proof of vaccination and wear a mask when not seated at the table. People will be responsible for their own breakfast, and you can review their menu at symposiumcafe.com - lots of good breakfast selections! There won't be a formal agenda, this is meant to provide an opportunity for club members to gather in person and share fellowship, something that hasn't been easily available for more than a year! Sharron will give us an update on the November fundraiser.
Because of the restriction on the number of those attending it is important that we know ahead of time who will be attending. Please either "accept" or "decline" as soon as possible, thank you!

September 28 2021, 7:00pm:
In this third session of our Building Awareness of Human Trafficking project, we have brought together three service providers who provide support and help to survivors of human trafficking.
Luisa Krause is the Director of Elora House, an agency that provides short-term housing and support to women exploited by sex trafficking, helping them to make healthy and informed decisions about their lives.
Kevin Coghill is the Executive Director and Pastor at the Royal City Mission where they provide meals to the vulnerable, working to make the invisible visible in our community.
Nicky Carswell is the Co-ordinator of the Anti-Human Trafficking Program at the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region (SASC) where a trauma-informed, harm reduction, and feminist approach is provided.
Through this panel presentation we will learn more about what each organization offers to survivors of human trafficking, and how as a community we can support the organizations in an effective way.

Guelph Wellington Basketeers
Oct. 07, 2021
Laura Blinkhorn is Coordinator for the Guelph-Wellington chapter of Basketeers. Since the launch of the local chapter in 2009, Guelph and Centre Wellington continue to come together as one generous and connected community! Last year, the Guelph-Wellington Basketeers chapter reached new heights, donating a record number of over 190 gift baskets to local women in need through our wonderful partners at the Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis Centre. In light of COVID-19, Basketeers has made the decision to continue to support the Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis Centre (GWWIC) this fall, while keeping the health and safety of you (our gracious supporters), our volunteers and our recipients a top priority. |
